The Joint History Project (JHP) is honoured to announce its upcoming annual international conference, “Violence in History: Experiences, Memories, and Representations in Southeast Europe,” taking place at Panteion University in Athens from 24 to 26 September 2026.
The conference brings together historians, educators, and researchers from 13 countries across Southeast Europe – Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, and Turkey – alongside colleagues from Germany, the UK, Norway, Canada, the US, and Spain. Over the course of three days, participants will engage in crucial knowledge and experience exchange around some of the most pressing questions facing history education in the region today. Discussions will focus on:
- Pedagogical approaches and teaching methodologies related to historical violence
- Collective memory and representation in the aftermath of conflict
- The gendered dimensions of violence
- Legacies of crimes, massacres, and genocides across Southeast Europe
The event is organized as part of the “History for the Future” project, funded by the German Federal Foreign Office and implemented by the European Fund for the Balkans (EFB), with special support from the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung.
