Athena Syriatou is Associate Professor of Modern and Contemporary European History at the Department of Humanities of Democritus University of Thrace. She has studied literature and history in Athens (BA) and London (MA and PhD). She is the Director of the Laboratory of Modern and Contemporary History. Her research interests focus on topics of social and cultural history in contemporary Europe, particularly Britain, such as nationalism and the shaping of identities through education in the 20th century, the uses of memory, public history, as well as the historiography of the British empire and post-colonial society. Her most recent publication (issue editor) is the 22.1 issue of Historein “Centre, Periphery and Back: European Historiographical Itineraries” June 2025.
